Year after year, trimming the Christmas Tree with mom always ended the same. She would place an old red bird, somewhere at the top of the tree. It has no string, or hanger and I remember mom perching it up there, positioning it just right, hoping that it's little feet and claws would sustain itself over the holidays. It always did. This red bird, a cardinal maybe looked as though it had seen many Christmases, with faded body, worn red feathers, imperfect shape and general well loved look. It never occurred to me to ask the meaning of this little red bird until one Christmas a few years back.
Mom explained that this little red bird had been passed down to her from her Grandmother, to her mother to herself. That is was a symbol of good luck for the holidays. I laughed when she told me this, remembering just how very superstitious my grandmother was, always carrying some sort of token of luck where ever she was.
This year, the thought of moms Lucky Red Bird has inspired me to make a flock of my own ornamental birds. Im not at all superstitious like my grandmother was, and I really don't believe in luck. I do however believe in LOVE!
So, my Holiday Love Birds have been hand made with an assortment of seasonal fabrics, filled with natural unspun wool, stitched up with great care and adorned with Vintage buttons. They are available for purchase at Pomegranates & Clementines in Aurora!
