Beltane May 1st
Beltane is a "green Holiday" celebrated each year on May 1st and the evening before. It was believed that if the people or couples took to the woods and fields to make love and share their fertility that it would mean a very fruitful season ahead. So, you can imagine back in a time where the majority of us lived of the land and were dependant upon good crops and a bountiful harvest that they would gladly participate in such a ritual to encourage crop growth! Traditionally, this was the wedding day of the God and Goddess, celebrated with dancing around the "may pole", music, flirtations, falling in love and a bonfire! People would leap over the fire to bless a couple or bring fertility. Last year I attended a wedding on May1st, it was very beautiful with the maypole beside the flowering magnolia tree. This year we painted and painted and painted for our mother earth alters class!
